My DNA Profile #1 Are You at Risk of Inheriting Diabetes?

Am "I" at Risk of having Diabetes?

You probably asked yourself this question at some point in your life when you discover your friends or loved ones who are seemingly healthy being diagnosed with Diabetes.

Last year, The Star reported a total of 3.5 million Malaysians about 17.5 per cent of the population aged 18 years and above are diabetic. In 2011, there were only 15.2 per cent diabetic patients recorded in Malaysia. Based on the National Health and Morbidity Survey conducted in 2015, at least 9.5 per cent of Malaysians were not even aware they were diabetic.

In a report published by the World Health Organisation, both Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) are caused by a combination of genetic and environmental risk factors. Family studies have shown that the first degree relatives of individuals with T2D are 3 times at risk of developing Diabetes as opposed to individuals with no prior family history of the disease. However, the good news is the early diagnosis of Diabetes through genetic susceptibility test will help you to uncover your health condition and mitigate it through lifestyle modifications, medical intervention and a healthy diet regime.

If you are eager to find out more on your personal health condition, you are invited to attend an educational talk on living a long, fulfilling live through personalised genetic profiling.
